Nyanaponika Thera was born in Sri Lanka. He trained under Buddhaghosa at the University of Ceylon, and received his doctorate in Pali and Sanskrit from the University of London. He came to the USA in 1965, where he became professor of Buddhist philosophy at Colgate University. Among his many books is The Heart of Buddhist Meditation, which is probably the most widely read book on Buddhist meditation in English.
